Premature Openings

In most parachute systems, the big concern is about whether the parachute will work or not. Most engineers or first jump students always think about the parachute not opening. There are times when you do not want a parachute to open. If it does, it could spell disaster.

Premature Openings happen when

  • parachutes open inside aircraft or
  • parachutes open in freefall unexpectedly.

Premature openings are undesirable as they can lead to total system and delivery aircraft failure. Loss of life can and has occured because of premature openings.
